Written by Deb Reid, Recruitment & Foster Family Matching Coordinator…
It’s hard to believe that it’s already been a year since I joined Foster Care Matters. Time really does fly when you’re doing something you love, surrounded by people who inspire you every day. After 19 years in the fostering world, this past year has been one of the most rewarding chapters of my career.
Joining Foster Care Matters felt like coming home. From the moment I walked through the door, I knew I was in the right place. Reuniting with Karen Palfreyman, our Fostering Service Manager, was a joy, and getting to know the rest of the team — Jenny, Dan, Emma, Charlotte, Jo, Andy and our CEO Susy — has been an absolute highlight. Their support, passion, and dedication to children in care have made this journey even more meaningful.
One of the most fulfilling parts of my role has been meeting incredible individuals who are stepping forward to become foster parents. Helping them through the recruitment process and watching their journeys unfold has been nothing short of inspiring. Supporting Karen with the Prepare to Foster training has also been a real privilege — there’s something special about being part of that first step in someone’s fostering journey.
What makes this role truly special is the ethos of Foster Care Matters. After years of working in more corporate settings, it’s refreshing and empowering to be part of a charity that puts children at the heart of everything. It’s not about numbers or targets — it’s about people, relationships, and making a real difference.
Another highlight has been connecting with our professional colleagues at local authorities. Their warm welcome and openness to working with us have been so encouraging, and it’s clear that we’re building something strong and lasting together.
Looking ahead, I’m excited for what the next year will bring. I can’t wait to continue supporting our families, matching children with the right homes, and welcoming even more amazing people into our agency. I truly believe we’re on the path to becoming the best fostering agency in the North West and Stoke-on-Trent — and I’m proud to be part of that mission.
On a personal note, I’m hoping to finally book that next holiday (sunshine, here I come!) and maybe even try out a new hairstyle—why not?
Friends, Family and past colleagues often ask me if I made the right decision leaving my previous role after ten years. My answer is always the same: 100% yes. While I’ll always be grateful for the experiences and friendships I made there, this move has reignited my passion and reminded me why I started working in fostering in the first place.
Here’s to year two — let’s make it even better.
