From empty nester, to foster parent!

6 January 2025

Many of our foster parents first thought about fostering when they had more space in their home and lives when a child has moved out. This could be when children have started university or chose to live independently.

When your children first leave home, you may experience a mix of emotions; one moment you’re celebrating their achievements, and the next, you’re in a quieter house, pondering how to fill your time and that empty space. This is a significant transition for both you and your child!

This new chapter can be a period of growth for you both. Have you thought about what to do with that empty bedroom? While it’s tempting to transform it into a craft room, ironing space, or storage, have you considered the positive impact you and your home could have on a child’s life?

Becoming a foster parent is an incredibly fulfilling journey. By caring for a child, you’ll receive a fostering allowance, typically around £460.00 per week*, though this amount may vary depending on the age and needs of the child in your care. In addition to the allowance, you will have excellent ongoing support from our Foster Care Matters team.

* Note: Foster parent households are entitled to a tax exemption of up to £18,140 per household and tax relief for every week you foster a child. This is known as qualifying care relief. Further guidance is available through HMRC or Tax Specialists.

Whether you consider short-term or long-term fostering, each day presents the chance for new adventures as you help a child in regaining a sense of safety and rebuilding trust after challenging early life experiences. The difference you can make is profound, and you won’t need to worry about your home feeling too quiet or how to occupy your time.
