Multigenerational family

Multigenerational households are one of the fastest-growing household type in the UK. The number of families residing with three or more generations under one roof has seen a significant increase in the last ten years. We delve into the potential of becoming a fostering family within a multigenerational home.

The advantages for children in care to receive support from a variety of adults are substantial. In the UK, many families have a grandparent living with them; these households are truly invaluable. Imagine the positive impact on children in care as they interact with individuals of various ages, gaining access to a wealth of wisdom and support. This arrangement offers children in care the chance to form connections not only with their foster parent and any other children in the home but also with a grandparent figure who can serve as an essential role model.

Deb, our family matching coordinator, shared,

“When family finding for a child, siblings or a teenager, I consider the support network within a foster family. It’s essential to ensure that they can address not only the practical aspects of caring for that child but also their emotional and therapeutic needs. It’s genuinely uplifting to witness the support systems that multigenerational foster families offer. In my experience working with multigenerational fostering families, I’ve observed that this dynamic enhances the fostering experience, and I encourage any type of family dynamic, who are able to offer a child or young person their own bedroom, to consider becoming a foster family.”
